Jewish Social Service Agencies and Professional Integration in the Immediate Postwar Years, by Laure Fourtage
In France, the question of professional integration took on an urgent and essential character in the particular context of the immediate post-World War II years. This article will examine this integration in the social service agencies set up for vulnerable Jewish populations between 1945 and 1948. During this period, a new conception of social services was adopted by the main Jewish charitable agencies : rehabilitation through work became a primary objective, even a prerequisite for receiving aid, and traditional forms of assistance, which continued to exist, were used to further better professional integration. The objective was for aid-recipients to integrate economically into their countries of residence, in France or elsewhere. A focus on the activities of ORT-France will enable us to provide an up-to-date picture of the consequences of these policies on the activities of an agency specialized in the professional training and placement of Jewish populations, as well as its place among the institutions that engaged in social work after the war.
