Cet article met l’accent sur les critiques de Thornton à Adam Smith en liaison avec son analyse du prêteur en dernier ressort. Il suggère que trois Thornton apparaissent dans le Paper Credit. Le premier est l’anti-déflationniste soucieux de la première partie du livre. Le second est l’anti-inflationniste inquiet de la seconde partie. Le troisième correspond au banquier praticien qui avait compris l’architecture financière émergente qui débouchait sur l’éviction de la monnaie métallique par le "papier de crédit". On conjecture que l’existence des lois sur l’usure, entre autres, a pu empêcher Thornton d’examiner complètement la possibilité pour la Grande Bretagne de tendre vers un système sans espèces monnayées.

This paper highlights Thornton’s criticisms of Adam Smith along with his lender of last resort analysis’. It suggests that there are three Mr. Thorntons who appear in Paper Credit. The first is the concerned anti-deflationist of the first section of the book. The second is the worried anti-inflationist of the second section. The third was the practical banker who understood the new emerging financial architecture that had resulted in paper credit supplanting metallic money. It is conjectured that the existence of the usury laws, inter alia, may have prevented Thornton from fully investigating the possibility of Great Britain moving to a specieless system.
