ABSTRACT — The article compares the history of the British and French war correspondent. It introduces the reader to the work of William Howard Russell, legendary war correspondent for The Times, and draws on British and American research on the emergence of the “war correspondent” in the 19^th century, in order to provide the history behind the figure of our contemporary war correspondent.
