Littérature et politique : le roman contractuel

La formule de base du roman réaliste comprend un récit à la troisième personne, dont le narrateur s’abstrait, et une reconstitution du social. La société se raconte, et en se racontant, elle se crée. Or, cette formule offre des analogies frappantes avec le contrat social qui fonde la démocratie moderne. On appellera donc roman contractuel cette sorte de roman où s’opère une mimésis du contrat social. Cela étant posé, le roman contractuel tient plus du modèle que du phénomène observable. C’est un récit idéal typique qui institue le roman moderne. Par conséquent, la formule du roman contractuel ne se rencontre pratiquement jamais à l’état pur, les renégociations et les dénonciations du contrat interne étant destinées à refigurer la crise permanente de la démocratie. Le roman expérimente une langue littéraire fondée non plus sur une rupture avec la langue commune, mais sur cette langue elle-même. Ce contrat linguistique est lui-même soumis à négociation et à contestation. The basic formula of the realistic novel integrates a impersonal narration, whose narrator is abstracted, and a reconstitution of the social world. The society is telling itself, and doing so, it creates itself. This formula offers an analogy with the social contract which gives the foundations of the modern democracy. We will call « contractual novel » this sort of fiction in which we can observe a mimesis of the social contract. Nevertheless, he contractual novel is more a model than an phenomenon that can be observed. It is an idealization of the narration which gives its foundations to the modern novel. Therefore, the formula of the contractual novel can almost never be encountered in its pureness, the renegotiations and denunciations of the internal contract being destined to reconfigure the permanent crisis of the demo-cracy. The novel experiment a literary language not grounded on a rupture with the ordinary language, but on this language itself. This linguistic contract is itself submitted to negotiation and contestation.
