Quatre synagogues en banlieue parisienne Livry-Gargan, Aulnay-sous-Bois, Le Raincy, La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire. 1923-1935
Élie Zajac
Synagogues are not only places of worship. They are also regarded as « places of remembrance » and as symbols of identity. The history of Jews in the suburbs has not been much studied up to now. Yet, many Jewish communities have flourished all around Paris. In Livry-Gargan, Aulnay-sous-Bois, Le Raincy, La Varenne, ashkenazim design and construct fine buildings. The relationship with their neigbourhood often is excellent and the inaugural ceremonies serve as opportunities for patriotic speeches. The history of those four synagogues underlines the actual equality and the freedom of cult that exist inside the Republic.
