Étudiants, savants et ingénieurs juifs originaires de l’Empire russe en France (1860-1940)

Dimitri Gouzevitch
The authors went through the archives of professional training colleges, universities and research institutes in France in order to draw out the first statistical tables and specific picture of the Jewish students coming from Russia. The number of this population accounts for the changes in the history of the Jews in Russia and of Europe on entering the first World War ; women are particularly numerous, whereas in their birth country they were far more debarred the right to have access to university than the men. For some of theese students, university was merely a blind for their political action, but for the majority it meant a longing to become true professionals. What befell them subsequently varied widely.
