Juifs du prince-abbé : les Juifs de Guebwiller
Denis Ingold
The permanent sojourn of Jews at Guebwiller since 1270 is only an illusion meant to hide their precarious conditions of life in modern times as well as in the Middle Ages. This analysis gives the particulars for the reasons of the demographic and economical stagnancy of the Jewish community during the XVIIIth century in this small town of upper Alsace while there is a relative prosperity in the neighbouring villages: seignorial limitations, heavy income taxes, latent antijudaism of the town corporation and the people. The community of Guebwiller must wait numerous decennies after the emancipation to reach a relative progress.
