The attitude of the colonial administration towards the few Jews who lived in French Western Africa under Vichy government symbolizes and, so to speak, is the caricature of the Vichy administration behaviour as concerns the « Jewish problem ». It proved stubbornly legalistic in the enforcement of the anti-Semitic laws down to the tiniest details. Regaining their rights by the Jews was hindered by Giraud Administration in the same way as it was in North Africa, and could only take effect when De Gaulle triumphed over his rival in 1943.
