Apprivoiser la langue pour construire l’espace : Les Juifs immigrés yiddishophones à Paris
Aline Benain
The study of the language, since this is altogether a mould for and an expression of the identity, must be considered important in the study of migratory movements and of the solutions of problems which deal with the system and methods used by a human group to apprehend its own space. Yiddish speaking immigrants who settle in Paris do not speak French and cannot master the Latin alphabet. The Yiddish publications dedicated to these people must bear in mind these two gaps in their knowledge. What needs be understood plainly is translated and transliterated as well, which means rewritten in Hebraic letters. The analysis of the various glossaries which are managed with this way of writing enables to understand how the new space where these people settle is progressively tamed and conquered.
