Diplomatie et affaire Finaly : l’intermède espagnol
Anne Dulphy
Mainly through diplomatic archives still unpublished (Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris, Center of diplomatic archives in Nantes) and the Memories of Germaine Ribière, the author analyses the various levels of the political negotiations concerning the return of the Finaly children once they were in Spain, and she links them together and puts them in perspective : the subtle intricacy of the identity assertion of the Basques facing Spain, the political tenseness between France and Spain added to the existence of republican exiles in France, the constraints of the cold war, the obstruction of the pro-Franco national Catholicism, the half-hearted pressure of the Vatican hierarchy, the diplomatic steps and the private mediations.
