Du rapatrié au séfarade. L’intégration des Juifs d’Afrique du Nord dans la société française : essai de bilan

Colette Zytnicki
This article intends to reach an assessment – a temporary one – of the integration of the Jews from North Africa in the French Society from 1960 to this day. First, let us point out the changing which occurred with the arrival of more than 200 000 persons, as concerns the geographical and demographical distribution of the Jews of France, and to underscore the deep renewing occurring thanks to that migration. The second part analyses the conditions and results of integration as a collective as well as an individual experience, and comes to qualified conclusions : it can be said that it was a successful integration if the evolution of the group for more than a generation is taken into account. On the whole the children of these migrants took advantage of the opportunities offered by a society more developed than that which their parents abandoned. Lastly, we observe the identity changes of the group which little by little becomes aware of its specificity in the midst of the French Judaism, and lets its voices be more and more audible, as they were fed with the culture and nostalgia of their original countries. There remains to know if this Sephardic identity will be allowed to last in a world where men and cultures get more and more mingled.
