L’action médico-sociale de l’OSE à Paris dans les années trente

Virginie Michel
Various studies brought to attention the part of OSE, a Jewish social aid organization created in Russia at the beginning of the XXth century, to rescue several hundreds of children during the Second World War. However, its role as an organization for health care and social warfare during the thirties is rarely looked into, because of the lack of archives. At the time of the prevailing hygienism, the organization sets up a prevention and aid policy in its centers for children. This action is meant children and their parents as well, and deals with hygiene and diet. At the same time, the OSE residential center, the first being started for children in 1934, accommodates Jewish children from three to seven years old, for whom no other institution existed at that time. In this organization, hygienist principles are adhered to, but the teachers also pay attention to the psychic opening up of the children they are dealing with. Lastly, a specialized house welcomes children undergoing behavior disorders. On the whole, it will be easier to understand how OSE could be so adaptable during the years of war and after, by going back over the conditions of the settling up of this organization in France and on the various means of assistance it was able to supply.
