The twenties, due to the development of a Jewish culture linked to Zionism and the “Yiddishkeit”, witness the coming out of critics specifically dealing with Jewish art and artists. In spite of its ambiguity, this last categorisation inspires extensively the organisation of exhibitions reserved to artists of Jewish origin, whatever might be the aesthetic aspect or the themes dealt with, as well as critics published in Jewish papers. Another example of this current is the creation of a collection of monographs, in French or in Yiddish as well, dealing with Jewish artists, for instance Chagall, whose works are openly of Jewish inspiration, or Pissarro or Modigliani, whose works have no link whatever with this origin. This criticism undoubtedly has a share in the waking up of this Jewish cultural trend of the twenties.
