Jérôme and Jean Tharaud, twin brothers in literature, meet with success during the twenties thanks to writings dealing with the Jewish life, be they novels or essays presented as historical. These writings were welcomed even often by the Jewish public itself, and this suggests that the ambivalence of exotic descriptions about foreign Jewish communities could have misled the readers. However, the essays Quand Israël est roi and Quand Israël n’est plus roi cannot be misunderstood. The anti-Semitic contents participate to their success, and it can be inferred from there that the kind or rose-tinted legends of the twenties, allegedly ignorant of the anti-Semitic hatred, might be questioned, and then to notice that the actors of this “Jewish awakening” were partially fooled.
