Le Père Michel Riquet. Du philosémitisme d’action lors des années sombres au dialogue interreligieux

Sylvie Bernay
Father Riquet (1898-1993) was one of the best known and most esteemed French Jesuites in the second half of the xxth century. As a disciple and then a friend of Jacques Maritain, he gets acquainted with the mystery of Israel and joins him in his battle towards an opening up of Catholicism. He becomes involved in the struggle against the expansion of anti-Semitism in the thirties. His part as an intermediary between the government of the “Front populaire” and the Church of France brings him to build up contacts and a friendship which will prove decisive during the Occupation. As a member of the Resistance in various groups, he is able to get the Church involved in his action of rescue and defence of the Jews of Paris, since he is well acquainted with its surroundings. On his return from deportation, he founds the Brotherhood of Abraham after Vatican II, an association for a theological and historical dialogue between Christians, Jews and Muslims.
