In drawing a picture of anti-Semitism in France during the thirties we are led to question its real dimension. Instead of a description through successive strokes or an attempt to approximate exact figures, this article proposes a dynamic study of the phenomenon in order to bring to light the trends and their respective evolution during this ten-year period. Thus, one can perceive the acceleration of anti-Semitism, even before the war; constantly progressing, it spread over numerous levels of society, especially in some groups, at times propagated by activists whose links to Hitlerism were quite clear. Finally, one sees the emergence of the idea that there is a real “Jewish question” which must be resolved, a sinister path which becomes clear with the sudden defeat of 1940. The deadly chain of events which then occurred can be thus considered as a simple continuation.
