L’auteur analyse à la demande de Jean son témoignage concernant les treize mois qu’il a passés avec sa mère et sa sœur dans le camp de Bergen-Belsen, à l’époque où celui-ci est devenu un camp d’extermination. D’un commun accord, ils centrent le travail sur ce qui a permis à l’enfant de s’en sortir, d’une part, des cartes postales dessinées et envoyées par son père, constituant une « aire d’illusion », un espace transitionnel, qui crée pour l’enfant un lieu acceptable dans l’inacceptable des camps, d’autre part, la présence de sa mère et la « présentation » chaque matin par elle de la photo du père, associée à la lecture du courrier lorsqu’il arrive. Cette présentation quotidienne du père par la mère donne son efficacité aux cartes postales. La mère de Jean montre à son fils combien le père est psychiquement présent pour elle. L’autre aspect essentiel de cet échange est qu’elle y introduit sa propre capacité à signifier l’absence du père, c’est-à-dire à symboliser.Mots-clés : Témoignage, Camp d’extermination, Aire d’illusion, Espace transitionnel, Capacité à symboliser. The author, at Jean’s request, analyses his testimony about the thirteen months he spent with his mother and sister in the camp of Bergen-Belsen when it became an extermination camp. Of a common accord, they focus the work on what enabled the child to overcome : on one hand, postcards drawn and sent by his father which constitute an area of “illusion”, a transitional space, creating an acceptable place within the unacceptable of camps; on the other hand, his mother’s presence and the “presentation” of his father’s picture that she shows him ever morning, associated with the reading of the mail at its arrival. This daily presentation of the father by the mother gives the postcards their effectiveness. Jean’s mother shows her son how much the father is psychologically present for her. The mother essential aspect of this exchange is that she introduces her own ability to signify the father’s absence that is to say to symbolize.Keywords : Testimony, Extermination camp, Area of illusion, Transitional space, Ability to symbolize.
