Phrynichos dans les scholies d’Aristophane

Le nom de Phrynichos apparaît souvent dans les comédies d’Aristophane, et en particulier quatre fois dans Les Grenouilles, vers 13, 689, 910, 1299. Comment identifier les personnages qui pouvaient porter ces noms ? Les érudits Alexandrins avaient rédigé une liste de quatre Phrynichos, qui fut conservée dans une scholie au v. 749 des Oiseaux. Cette liste, si on la joint aux scholies des vers mis en question, doit nous permettre d’identifier chacun par son patronyme et sa fonction dans la société athénienne. Mais quand les identifications proposées divergent pour un même cas, il faut beaucoup de discernement pour ne pas être dupe de l’extrême ingéniosité des scholiastes : ainsi pour le personnage nommé au v. 689 des Grenouilles, identifié de trois façons. Il y a donc un « Bon Usage » des scholies, et il peut malheureusement y en avoir un dangereux.
Enfin, sur les quatre noms de la liste, le deuxième, « fils de Choroclès, acteur de théâtre », il a toutes les chances d’être celui dont parlent les vers 1091 des Nuées 1302, 1490, 1524 des Guêpes.
Quant au Phrynichos « l’atticiste », du IIe s. ap. J.-C., il n’apparaît évidemment que dans les scholies. The names of « Prynichos » appears freqently in he comedies of Aristophanes, including four times in the Frogs, at lines 13, 689, 910, and 1299. How can one identify the different beares of the name ? The scholars of Alexandria compiled a list of four men called Prynichos, which is preserved in a Scholion on the Birds, line 749. This list with the evidence of the Scholia on the lines of the Frogs in question, ought to allow us to assign to each his patronymic and place in Athenian society. But when there is more than one identification, great care is needed not to be led astray by the extreme ingenuity of the Scholiasts : three identities are offered for the person mentioned at Frogs 689. Thus, beside a correct use of the Scholia, there is one that is fraught with danger. Of the four men on the list of the Scholiasts, the second, the actor and son of Chorocles, does not appear in the Frogs : but he may well be the man of Clouds 1091 and Wasps 1302, 1490, and 1524. The Atticist of the second century AD obviously exists only in the Scholia.
