“A phantom of his own figuring.” The Poetry of Thomas Hardy

Beginning with an analysis of “After a Journey” the article concentrates on Poems of 1912-13, on the ghost and haunting. The ghost is considered firstly as the trace of a historically defined topos but also as a metatextual figure, one that permits the deconstruction of apparently stable binary oppositions such as Victorian/ Modern, facilitating the examination of the relationship between text and intertext, and Hardy’s relationship to the elegy as genre, as well as the manner of the reconstruction of his place in the canon during the twentieth century. In general terms the article attempts to suggest that all textual work is a negotiation with an evasively absent presence and an ambiguously present absence—something of which the phantom is perhaps an emblem. À partir d’une analyse de « After a Journey », l’article s’intéresse surtout au recueil Poems of 1912-13, au fantôme et à tout ce qui « hante ». Le fantôme est d’abord envisagé comme trace d’un topos qui fascinait l’époque, mais aussi comme figure métatextuelle, figure qui permet la déconstruction d’oppositions apparemment stables comme victorien/moderne ; qui permet aussi la compréhension du rapport texte/intertexte ; comme celui qu’entretient l’œuvre du poète avec l’élégie comme genre ainsi que sa place dans le canon tel qu’il a été reconstruit au XX^e siècle. De manière générale on suggère ici que tout travail textuel est une négociation avec une présence incertaine et absente, et une absence présente de façon ambiguë, négociation dont le fantôme pourrait servir d’« incarnation ».
