Queer, Quaint and Camp: Alan Hollinghurst’s own return to the English tradition

Alan Hollinghurst purports to introduce a gay perspective in his essays and fiction writing. He draws a subtle distinction between the “gay novel,” in which the homosexual condition and male fellowship are given prominence, and the “homosexualization of the novel”: an attempt to aestheticize fiction so that it escapes the normative claims of morality. For Hollinghurst, Ronald Firbank is the chief exponent of what he regards as an enterprise to subvert the novel, through a marginalized, eccentric point of view. This article argues that, far from taking the novel into new, unchartered territories, Hollinghurst is a writer of the Tradition, even if the tradition he revives is on the margin of the mainstream. Using one of the novelist’s favourite tropes, it can be said that from The Swimming Pool Library to The Line of Beauty, Hollinghurst follows a curved line of continuity. Alan Hollinghurst entend introduire un foyer de conscience homophile dans ses essais et sa fiction. Il établit un distinguo subtil entre le roman gay, dans lequel la condition homosexuelle et les relations masculines sont traitées en priorité, et ce qu’il appelle « l’homosexualisation du roman » ; une entreprise d’esthétisation du roman, plaçant celui-ci hors d’atteinte des normes morales. Pour Hollinghurst, Ronald Firbank est le représentant de ce qu’il considère comme une entreprise de subversion romanesque, à travers un point de vue excentrique marginal. Cet article démontre que loin d’engager le roman dans les territoires non balisés de l’innovation formelle, Hollinghurst est un écrivain de la Tradition, même si la tradition qu’il réactualise s’inscrit à la marge de la mémoire littéraire la plus souvent célébrée. En utilisant l’une des images préférées du romancier, on pourrait dire que, de The Swimming Pool Library à The Line of Beauty, Hollinghurst ne fait que suivre une ligne de continuité sinueuse.
