Le rôle des responsables militaires ne dépend pas uniquement de l’importance du facteur militaire dans la politique extérieure mais, bien souvent, de la situation des élites militaires dans le système de décision politico-administratif. À cet égard, l’histoire du XX^e siècle est riche d’enseignements. En ce début de XXI^e siècle, la situation est-elle en train d’évoluer ? La politique extérieure a subi une véritable révolution depuis dix ans, et la société militaire bénéficie désormais des progrès de la formation de ses élites. Pourtant, les militaires éprouvent toujours des difficultés à formuler les grands choix futurs relatifs à l’organisation structurelle des armées. The Role and the Influence of the Military on French Foreign Policy. Lessons of the 20th Century
The role of the military depends not only on the importance of the military factor on foreign policy, but also on the situation of military elites within the political decision-making system. In this regard, the 20th century is rich on historical lessons. However, at the beginning of the 21st century, is the military situation evolving in some way ? Foreign policy has gone through an authentic revolution over the past ten years, and the military society has benefited from the improved training of its elite. Nevertheless, military still suffer from formulating the main future choices concerning the structural organisation of the armed forces.
