Du wait and see à l’anticipation rhétorique : la redéfinition forcée de la stratégie politique syrienne

Les récentes menaces proférées par certains membres de l’Administration américaine à l’encontre de la Syrie semblent confirmer des craintes maintes fois affichées par Damas : le risque de voir une présence militaire américaine en Irak se perpétuer et provoquer un remodelage politique de tout le Moyen-Orient. Soumis désormais à des pressions intenses de la part de Washington, le gouvernement syrien semble ainsi devoir procéder à une révision de sa stratégie politique, substituant progressivement, et par la force des choses, à sa traditionnelle politique du wait and see une rhétorique qu’il espère capable de faire valoir ses positions politiques sur la scène internationale. Reste à savoir si ce choix pragmatique pourra, à l’avenir, préserver le pays des ambitions américaines et israéliennes affichées à son encontre.
From a Wait-and-see Policy to a Rhetoric Anticipation : The Syrian Political Strategy Forced into Redefinition
The recent threats uttered by members of the American Administration against Syria seem to justify the worries often manifested by Damascus regarding the risk of a perpetual American military presence in Iraq, which could lead to the political remolding of the entire Middle East. Under Washington’s acute pressure, the Syrian government is compelled to revise its political strategy by progressively, and through the force of circumstances, substituting its traditional wait-and-see policy for a rhetoric which the government hopes will permit to make the most of its political positions on the international scene. The remaining question is whether this pragmatic choice will preserve Syria from future American and Israeli ambitions directed against the country.
