Huit mois après la fin officielle des combats en Irak, un désordre quasi général règne dans un pays occupé et en proie aux plus profondes divisions. Devant le redéploiement stratégique des États-Unis dans la région, se pose la question des réelles motivations de l’intervention en Irak. L’attrait du pétrole est une hypothèse à écarter en raison du fait que les relations entre les États-Unis et l’Arabie Saoudite n’ont jamais été aussi bonnes. La seconde hypothèse tient à la position géostratégique de l’Irak. En effet, une simple présence dans ce pays permettrait aux États-Unis non seulement de sécuriser les voies d’acheminement des ressources énergétiques, mais surtout de contenir toute velléité malveillante de la part des États de la région envers l’allié israélien. Eight months after the official end of the war in Iraq, the country is faced with general chaos and profound divisions. In dealing with the American strategic re-deployment in the region, the question of the true motivations of their intervention in Iraq may be raised. The search for oil is no valid hypothesis, since the relationships between the United States and Saudi Arabia have never been so good. The second hypothesis is the geo-strategic position of Iraq. Indeed, an American presence in this country would give the United States the opportunity not only to secure energy roads, but also to contain any tentative attack coming from the states of the region and directed against their Israeli ally.
