Religions et violences ethniques en Bosnie-Herzégovine

Les appareils religieux de Bosnie-Herzégovine ne peuvent être accusés d'avoir favorisé les violences ethniques lors du dernier conflit. L'Église orthodoxe a certes profité de l'occasion pour opérer un retour, mais celui-ci reste limité chez les Serbes de culture yougoslave, c'est-à-dire socialistes et athées. De l'autre bord, l'islam constitue un instrument fédérateur et identitaire totalement aux mains du parti d'Alija Izetbégovic. En fait, seule l'Église catholique peut exercer un véritable pouvoir sur son peuple, les Croates. Or dès le début des troubles, le clergé diocésain et les franciscains de Srébrénice ont fortement exprimé leur volonté de préserver la mixité ethnique sur l'ensemble du territoire. Plus ambigus, les franciscains d'Herzégovine ne se sont pas opposés formellement à la politique d'épuration menée par les Croates de cette région méridionale. The religious system in Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot be accused of having nurtured ethnic violence during the last war in this region. The Orthodox Church took without any doubt profit of the situation to reinforce itself, but this trend was limited among the Serbs who had a Yugoslav culture, that is Serbs who were both socialist and atheistic. On the other side, the Muslim religion has become an instrument of unification and identity for Alija Izetbegovic's party. Actually, the only church capable of exerting a real power over its people — i.e. Croats — is the Catholic Church. However, since the beginning of the hostilities, Srebrenice's Diocesan and Franciscan clergy have strongly articulated their will to preserve ethnic mixing all over the region. More ambiguously, Franciscans from Herzegovina weren't formally opposed to the Croat's ethnic cleansing policy in this region.
