En choisissant de chanter Strange Fruit, Billie Holiday fait basculer tout un pan du mythe du «Noir naturel», pur, inculte et primitif, auquel certains chroniqueurs blancs ont cru et voulu faire croire. Bien plus, elle retourne le mythe comme un gant, en brouille les repères sans pour autant s’insurger ouvertement contre la face cachée du mythe, c’est-à-dire contre un système et une société qui ont cherché à maintenir les Noirs américains dans un état de sujétion au prix de brimades, sévices ou tortures meurtrières perpétrées «pour l’exemple»... Cet article propose une histoire sociale d’une chanson composée en 1937 par un Blanc intégrationniste, Abel Meeropol, et qui décrit un lynchage.Mots-clés : anthropologie du jazz, réalisme, racisme, devoir de mémoire, Billie Holiday. By choosing to sing Strange Fruit, Billie Holiday undid a whole section of the myth of the natural – pure, uneducated, and primitive – Negro, in which certain white reporters believed and wanted to make others believe. Even more, she turned the myth inside out and blurred its signals without, however, openly rebelling against its hidden side, i.e., against a system and a society that sought to keep Black Americans in a state of subservience by bullying, mistreating or torturing them just in order to «set an example». This article proposes the social history of a song that, composed in 1937 by a white integrationist, Abel Meeropol, describes a lynching.Keywords : social anthropology of jazz, realistic turn, racism, duty to remember, Billie Holiday.
