La mort des amants dans le Tristan en prose. Quand la légende révèle à travers l’image son ancrage biblique

L’intégration de la légende de Tristan dans l’épopée arthurienne en prose, au XIIIe siècle, offre l’exemple d’un remaniement fondamental : la mort des amants, l’emblème même de la tradition tristanienne et la raison de son succès, est entièrement modifiée. Les romans n’offrent pas de raison à ce revirement et c’est vers l’image que nous devons nous tourner, en tant que complément naturel du texte médiéval, auquel elle est physiquement associée dans les manuscrits. L’enluminure offre un regard rétrospectif sur le texte et sur sa genèse : la figure biblique de David s’impose ainsi dans l’image comme fondement d’une nouvelle représentation de la blessure de Tristan par le roi Marc, et la dernière étreinte des amants comme résonance lointaine de la déploration de la Vierge sur le corps du Christ. L’image au Moyen Âge n’est pas simple ornement, il faut la reconnaître comme une autre forme de glose, elle offre un autre point de vue sur le texte. The integration of the legend around Tristan into the Arthurian prose epic cycle in the 13th century provides an interesting example of thorough revision : the lovers’ death, which is the core symbol of the Tristan tradition and the reason for its success, is completely altered. The romances do not provide any reason for the change, and we must turn to the illustration, which was a natural complement to the medieval text to which it was associated in the manuscripts. The book illumination provides another way of perceiving the text and its origins : here the Biblical figure of David can clearly be seen as the foundation of a new representation of Tristan wounded by King Mark, and the lovers’ last embrace echoes an image of Pieta, with the Virgin weeping on Christ’s body. Medieval illustrations are not mere ornaments ; they must be acknowledged as another form of comment, offering a different perception of the text.
