Avatars d’un griffonnage à succès : L’Epitaphe du duc Philippe de Bourgogne de Jean Molinet

Adrian Armstrong
The Epitaphe du duc Philippe de Bourgogne, a short poem commemorating Philip the Good of Burgundy, is the most widely transmitted work of Jean Molinet, the offi cial Burgundian court poet and chronicler between 1475 and 1507. Analysis of the Epitaphe’s reception, on the basis of manuscript and printed witnesses, indicates not only how Molinet’s contemporaries read the poem, but also how its versifi cation produces particular effects. Most manuscript witnesses are devoted primarily to recent history, especially Burgundian history, or produced in a Burgundian milieu; in many cases, the Epitaphe has been copied into an already complete volume. These contexts highlight the poem’s documentary and propagandistic value. However, the Epitaphe’s formal features also prove signifi cant: variant layouts indicate that its use of alexandrines, relatively unusual for the period, confuses several scribes. Keywords : Burgundy, codicology, Molinet, poetry, propaganda.
