The Effect of Trade Unions on Wages

This article reviews the literature on the union wage premium across countries. It identifies the mechanisms by which unionization may generate a wage premium, discusses the difficulties in obtaining an unbiased estimate of the effects and presents evidence on the size of those effects. The paper concludes with comments on the implications for policy and future research.
