La structure cognitive et normative de la confiance

Les sciences sociales contemporaines considèrent la confiance comme un mécanisme informel, infra institutionnel, de coordination des actions, un mécanisme qui présente l’avantage de réduire les « coûts de transaction » liés à la recherche d’informations et à l’exercice d’un contrôle réciproque. Mais elles butent sur la compréhension de la logique paradoxale du phénomène, en particulier sur la manière dont y sont articulés connaissance et engagement, et sur ses fondements moraux/sociaux. Cet article se propose en conséquence d’élucider les points suivants : l’articulation entre connaissance et engagement, ou entre raisons et pari ; l’appui de la confiance comme attitude sur un attunement préalable des capacités et des habitudes aux régularités de l’environnement ; la multiplicité des pratiques de la confiance et les variations de sa structure ; les conditions sociales d’une confiance généralisée dans les sociétés démocratiques. The contemporary social sciences consider trust as an informal, infra-institutional mechanism of the coordination of actions, which has the advantage of reducing "transaction costs" related to the search for information and the exercise of mutual control. But they are faced with the difficulty of understanding the paradoxical logic of the phenomenon, especially the way in which knowledge and engagement are articulated, and its moral/social underpinnings. This article therefore aims to clarify the following points: the articulation between knowledge and engagement, orbetween reason and risk; the impact of trust as an attitude on a prior attunement of capacities and habits to the regularities of the environment; the multiple ways of practising trust and the variations of its structure; and, lastly, the social conditions of generalized trust in democratic societies.
