Les travaux sur la localisation des industries et sur la formation des villes que René Maunier a publiés entre 1908 et 1910 voulaient montrer la pertinence des analyses sociologiques face aux explications géographiques des ces phénomènes. Leur étude nous permet ainsi d’analyser les rapports entre les sociologues et les géographes au début du XX siècle, en les situant dans un triple débat. Tout d’abord, celui qui traversait l’ensemble des disciplines qui se réclamaient des sciences sociales, notamment la sociologie, la géographie, l’économie politique et le droit. Ensuite, le débat, à l’intérieur du champ de la sociologie, entre les durkheimiens et les sociologues proches de René Worms. Enfin, le débat entre les savants et les réformateurs sociaux qui considéraient la « décentralisation industrielle » comme la solution aux problèmes sociaux engendrés par la concentration urbaine. L’étude des travaux de Maunier peut ainsi contribuer à mesurer l’intérêt que la sociologie portait à l’époque aux phénomènes urbains. In his works, published between 1908 and 1910, René Maunier has considered the location of the industry and the formation of the cities like social phenomena explained by the sociology and not by the only geographical factors. Thus, the study of his works permits to analyse the relationships between sociologists and geographers, in France, in the beginning of the 20th century. The study of Maunier’s work brought this article to consider the relationships of sociology not only with geography but also with the other disciplines that composed the field of social sciences, in particular with political economy and law. It also considers the opposition, on the field of sociology, between sociologists grouped round E. Durkheim and those who are grouped round R. Worms. Finally, the article considers the debate between scholars and social reformers who thought of the « décentralisation industrielle » as the solution of the social problems engendered by urban concentration. So, the study of Maunier’s works could also inform us of the interest of sociology, in this period, in urban phenomena.
