L’intervention de Pierre Bourdieu au Val Fourré, en décembre 1999, a été diversement perçue et appréciée par le public auquel il s’est adressé. L’article décrit les interactions conflictuelles qui se sont alors nouées, et interroge les relations des intellectuels aux classes populaires, en mobilisant les catégories de la sociologie critique. Il cherche à mettre au jour les limites de l’entreprise du “scholarship with committment” (du « savoir engagé ») à partir de la réception contrastée de l’intervention du sociologue, en identifiant certains des obstacles à l’appropriation profane d’une analyse des mécanismes de domination. Pierre Bourdieu’s visit to a working class suburb in 1999 was diversely received and appreciated by the audience he had come to address and share his knowledge with. The article uses ethnographic knowledge of the Val Fourré and the tools of critical sociology to describe the reception of his conference. It explores the different lines of conflict that emerged in the interaction. It questions the relationship of intellectuals with the ‘lower classes’. It seeks to explore the limits of ‘scholarship with commitment’ by identifying some of the obstacles hindering a layman’s appropriation of the analyses of domination mechanisms.
