Ce travail met en évidence la place qui revient à la théorie de la récapitulation de Haeckel dans l’extension, à laquelle procède Freud, des mécanismes de la psyché individuelle à la pensée collective. En passant de l’ontogenèse à la phylogenèse il fait de la psychologie une science capable de comprendre non seulement comment se développent les psychonévroses chez l’individu, mais aussi pourquoi elles sont un caractère spécifique de l’être humain. En remontant à l’évolution de l’espèce humaine Freud pouvait, fidèle à la pensée évolutionniste et matérialiste du darwinisme, généraliser le sens de ses découvertes et fonder leur caractère universel. Ainsi en revenant aux sources biologiques de la psychanalyse, ce regard historique propose une réponse au débat constamment réactivé tant chez les historiens que chez les ethnologues par les constructions de Freud sur l’origine du monothéisme ou des premières institutions totémiques.Mots-clés : Freud, Haeckel, Ontogenèse, Phylogenèse, Récapitulation (théorie de la). This article throws new light on the importance of the theory of recapitulation in Haeckel’s work and on in its application, undertaken by Freud, to the workings of the individual psyche and collective thought. Exploring both ontogenesis and then phylogenesis, he turns psychology into a science that is capable of understanding not only how psycho-neuroses develop in the individual, but also why they are a specific characteristic of human beings. By tracing the human species back to its origins in evolution, Freud could, and he remains here faithful to Darwin’s materialist thinking on evolution, establish a general basis for the revelations of his discovery and establish its universal character. Thus, by returning to the biological sources of psychoanalysis, this historical perspective provides one answer to the debate which is constantly refuelled by historians or ethnologists through Freud’s ideas on the origins of monotheism or the first totemic institutions.
