Le thème de l’immaturité est cher à Gombrowicz, qui le conçoit comme une passion de la jeunesse et de l’inachèvement. En mettant cette forme esthétique à la place de son idéal du moi, il lui consacre la plupart de ses romans. Ferdydurke est à cet égard intéressant en tant qu’autobiographie fantasmée, mettant à nu les affres de toute maturation créatrice. Cette œuvre propose un mythe de la création littéraire qui, par la mise en scène du combat que livre le héros-écrivain avec ses idéaux, nous plonge dans les dimensions plastiques du narcissisme en mettant à l’épreuve des notions métapsychologiques comme l’idéalisation et la sublimation. Gombrowicz offre sur bien des plans un accès au problème qui habite les hommes dans le processus qui les porte à grandir. Immaturity is a theme close to the heart of Gombrowicz, who sees it as form of passionate, youthful incompletion. By setting this aesthetic form in the place of his ego-ideal he devotes nearly all his novels to the theme. Ferdydurke is interesting in this light, as it is an autobiography over-brimming with fantasies and that shares with the reader all the torments of the creative maturing process. The work sets forward a myth for literary creation, which, most particularly in the scene where the hero-writer fights against his ideals, sends us deep down into the plastic dimensions of narcissism by challenging such meta-psychological notions as idealisation and sublimation. Gombrowicz opens up new ways of approaching problems that confront many people in the growing up process.
