Le décrochage est synonyme de démobilisation, démotivation, démission de l’élève, et par là même, perte du lien social. À l’école Decroly, c’est précisément ce lien, ce rapport à l’école qui est pensé autrement, dans le cadre d’une pédagogie axée sur l’intérêt de l’enfant, et la prise en compte de sa globalité, (d’où le terme d’enfant et non d’élève). Cette conception de l’enfant repose sur une relation de confiance entre les différents acteurs de la communauté scolaire : enfants, enseignants et parents. Cette confiance se construit aussi grâce au travail d’équipe, qui permet de partager les expériences, élaborer les règles de vie collectives, dans une reconnaissance de la différence de chaque enfant.
Si l’école Decroly ne fabrique pas de décrocheurs, elle peut néanmoins en accueillir en cours de parcours. La présentation de certains cas d’enfants montre que le cadre sécurisant de l’école leur permet (s’il n’y a pas de trouble psychique important), de reprendre confiance en eux et de se réconcilier avec l’institution scolaire.

How do the basic principles of the functioning of the Decroly school enable it to avoid having to deal with the problem of early school leaving
Dropping out means for pupils, a dispersal, demotivation, giving up on schooling, and thereby experiencing the loss of crucial social links. Decroly school, an alternative state school, offers the missing links in a way that that is organised in a different way, within the framework of pedagogical methods centered on the interest of the child, and on the consideration of its global nature, (hence the use of the word “child” and not “pupil”). This concept of the child rests on a relation of trust between the various members of the school community: children, teachers and parents, organized in a social network of practices. This trust is possible due to the pedagogical teamwork, which allows all those involved to share the experiences, to elaborate on the collective rules of school life, in an acceptance of the diverse nature of each child. Although Decroly school does not have a record of drops-outs, it nevertheless can and will welcome a few at some point in their school career. The outcome from certain cases analysed of these children has shown that the school organization makes them feel secure (if there is no important underlying psychological problem), and enables them to regain their self-confidence and adapt themselves within the school system once more.
